Cyber Security Research Engineer

Honeywell is seeking a Cyber Security Research Engineer for our Golden Valley, MN location.

We are seeking an experienced Research Engineer to define and conduct innovative world-class research on the security of computer and embedded systems, including computers, operating systems, software applications, communications devices, control systems, protocols and communications networks. Systems of particular interest include SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Access), DCS (Distributed Control Systems), energy management, building automation, physical access control, and digital video/surveillance. Cloud, mobile and IoT platforms and technologies are increasingly relevant in the domains of interest.


·         Identify and propose solutions to research challenges in the security of electronic systems

·         Create designs employing logical access control, authentication, cryptography, audit, forensics, and anomaly and misuse detection to provide information integrity, confidentiality, availability, and non-repudiation

·         Reverse engineer software, firmware, hardware, and/or network protocols

·         Perform vulnerability analysis on a diverse set of systems, technologies and domains

·         Evaluate attack surfaces, identify vulnerabilities and build proof-of-concepts (PoC) to demonstrate impact to stakeholders

·         Investigate new areas in cyber-physical system security and conduct world-class research

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering or similar discipline with an emphasis on electronic system security
  • Must be US citizen with the ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance


  • Master’s degree or PhD in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering or similar discipline with an emphasis on electronic system security
  • An active Security Clearance or have previously held a clearance within last two years
  • 8+ years’ research and development experience, applying deep technical knowledge to complete projects and provide high-impact results
  • Software development experience (PoC-level) in C/C++, python, Java, .NET, or similar
  • Experience using virtualization platforms such as VMWare
  • Experience with a variety of operating systems (e.g. Windows, Linux, mobile, embedded)
  • Experience analyzing and debugging network traffic/protocols (wired and wireless)
  • A working knowledge of modern cloud and mobile technologies
  • Strong systems or software design skills
  • A passion for learning and the ability to quickly analyze, incorporate and apply new information and concepts
  • The ability to work efficiently with remote team members
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Experience with field devices with emphasis on engineering, programming and servicing of those systems
  • Experience in SCADA, energy / smart gird, building automation or related fields
  • Individuals who are self-motivated and able to work with little supervision, who consistently take the initiative to get things done
  • Experience with the tools found in the Kali Linux distribution (or similar)
  • Experience evaluating the security of system hardware
  • Experience in developing research proposals to internal and external customers
  • Working knowledge with OWASP Top 10 for web applications, mobile and IoT
  • Knowledge/interest in software-defined networking (SDN) and/or radio (SDR), fuzzing, blockchain technologies, and/or machine learning (ML)
  • Certifications from: (ISC)2, SANS/GIAC, or Offensive Security
